Empowering Songs

Music is a big part of my life.  Even my earliest memories are associated with music.  The soundtrack of my life contains all types of music . . . any genre . . . every genre. So when one of my facebook friends asked:

What is the most empowering song to you as a woman?

My brain like a computer going through a massive discography archive began spitting out several answers not just one. The very first ones to come to mind were strong Latina singers with powerful voices and amazing lyrics.

India-Ahora Soy Diferente (Salsa)

Ivy Queen - La Vida Es Asi (Reggaeton)

While these songs are both about relationships doesn't mean I feel a woman is not complete unless she's in one. I love that these songs are about taking control of their lives. It's about learning from painful mistakes and choosing to live the life they want to live.

Then I thought about the word: empower. Breaking the rules, breaking expectations, crossing boundaries, living life my way is what makes me feel empowered. So when I think about amazing, talented singers speaking up against injustices of the world I thought of . . .

Lauren Hill - I Get Out

Jill Scott "Golden"

P!nk - Most Girls

Alanis Morissette - Precious Illusions

No Doubt - Just A Girl

Joan Jett - Bad Reputation

I could go on but I won't.  I hope you found something new to explore.

What song comes to mind for you as being the most empowering?

authorize, enable, allow, capacitate, charge, commission, delegate, entitle, entrust, grant, invest, legitimize, license, okay, permit, privilege, empower , encourage, endorse, establish, get behind, give go-ahead, go along with, hats off to, make law, make valid, mandate, pronounce, push for, ratify, recommend, sanction, seal, second, sign, sign off on, stump for, subscribe to, support
