Happy Birthday Mom

“It takes a long time to grow young.” Pablo Picasso

When I think of birthdays family reunions come to mind.  Not that we need an excuse to get everyone together but sometimes it serves as motivation.  It's a great time to catch up with the people I don't see often.

Our birthday tradition is dinner followed by cake but there's a catch.  There has to be at least one edible item that is out of the ordinary.   Something savory that we don't eat often or a spectacular something new we haven't tried before. The tasty treat is the element of surprise and not to be revealed to the birthday person ahead of time.

The theme for my mom's birthday last year was mango & coconut.  Everything was dressed in varying shades of orange from the table cloth to plates, margarita glasses and the even the flowers. The cake was coconut flavor and our out of the ordinary edible treat was mango sherbert.
Yeah, it was pretty yummy :)

Do you have any birthday traditions?

"A birthday is just the first day of another 365-day journey around the sun. Enjoy the trip." Unknown

"You are only young once, but you can stay immature indefinitely." Ogden Nash

"And in the end, it's not the years in your life that count. It's the life in your years.” Abraham Lincoln

"I'm sixty years of age. That's 16 Celsius." George Carlin

Passing by from Blogfrog. This is a lovely tradition, I like the use of something edible that you wouldn't normally eat. As a family we usually meet for dinner and my mum would make a cake, I have tried to continue this since she became ill, but my cakes doesn't have her touch! Great visiting your site. Have a blessed weekend
