Fun Avocado Facts:
- The word avocado comes from it's Spanish name = Aguacate.
- Avocados are a fruit, not a vegetable, belonging to the genus Persea in the Lauraceae family.
- The avocado is also called an Alligator Pear because of its pear-like shape and green skin.
- Avocados are originally from Mexico, later spreading to Peru and other parts of the planet.
How to know when you avocado is ripe:
Avocado fruit does not ripen on the tree nor does it fall to the ground when ripe. Ripe avocados yield to the gentle pressure you've applied. Unripe avocados are hard to the touch and can take 4 to 5 days to ripen at room temperature.
The correct way to test an avocado for ripeness it to hold the fruit in the palm of your hand gently squeeze with all fingers. If the flesh gives with slight pressure, it is ready to use.
Avocados can be frozen for up to 2 months if you want to use them later. It is best to freeze them as a puree rather than in whole fruit form or in slices.
