Because I write everyday I've become very aware of language and every so often certain words or phrases capture my attention. The other day I had the television on in the background while doing some reading when I heard the phrase:
"Bambi was a boy!"
I was a child when I last saw the movie or read the book so I couldn't remember if it was true or not. Turns out Bambi is a boy but the only thing I remembered for sure was the death of his mother. You know how Disney loves to kill off moms.
This made me wonder what else I've forgotten. You know like all those things we are taught in school. Do we really forget? Do we lose our ability to access these memories?
Which reminds me I did learn how memory works in a psychology class I took in college. Funny I did not remember until I typed the previous sentence.
Okay super quick lesson on how memory works:
There are three major processes involved in memory: encoding, storage and retrieval. Once information has been successfully encoded, it is stored in memory for later use. To recall memories we use certain triggers to activate associated memories. There are four basic ways in which information can be pulled from long-term memory: Recall, Recollection, Recognition and Relearning.

The method I just used for improving my memory was to teach these concepts.
Do you have any tips or tricks for remembering things?
and
Did you remember Bambi was a boy?
