Teaching & Practicing Compassion

"Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a harder battle." Plato

Compassion: Deep awareness of the suffering of another coupled with the wish to relieve it.

Pondering on the idea of compassion in the world today or lack there of in our communities was the inspiration for my most recent article.  We live in a violent world but I will not allow it to turn me into a cold hearted unfeeling creature.  I am human. I laugh and I cry ... and ... I care deeply about my world.

We must remind ourselves and our children, what we see on television is dramatized for the effect of getting us to purchase products and services.  They are devices used to trick you into thinking you want something you don't need.  We must not let children get pulled into the violence or get stuck there.  They rely on our voices.  I have no problem using mine.  I hope you join me.

What we do need is compassion and action.  There can never be enough.

Do you teach your children compassion?

When was the last time you practiced compassion?

"Love and compassion are necessities, not luxuries. Without them, humanity cannot survive." Dalai Lama XIV

"There are scores of people waiting for someone just like us to come along; people who will appreciate our compassion, our encouragement, who will need our unique talents. Someone who will live a happier life merely because we took the time to share what we had to give." Leo Buscaglia

I like that, Compassion & Action. Could be the name of a campaign or initiative. I'm a firm believer that our children learn by example. I've never done anything deliberate or conscious to teach our son empathy, yet, he's one of the most empathetic little boys I've ever met. I feel my job is done. :-)
